    'Throttle College'? Ted Hughes's Cambridge Poetry

    Ted Hughes often characterised his time at Cambridge as uninspiring and unproductive. Yet this article is the first scholarly study to examine the surviving work that Hughes produced while he was a student. I publish a student poem of Hughes's for the first time, and deploy highly innovative, original archival work from the Cambridge University Library and British Library to show that Hughes was reading voraciously and writing prolifically while he was at University. I demonstrate how early work by Hughes was remarkably prescient of his later, collected poems

    Proceeding from a close reading of both Birthday Letters and the poems of Sylvia Plath, and also from a consideration of secondary and biographical works, I argue that implicit within Birthday Letters is an explanation for Sylvia Plath's death and Ted Hughes's role in it. Birthday letters is a collection of 88 poems written by Ted Hughes to his first wife, the poet Sylvia Plath, in the years following her death, There are two aspects to the explanation Ted Hughes provides. Both are connected to Sylvia Plath's poetry. Her development as a poet not only causes her death as told in Birthday Letters, but it also renders Ted Hughes incapable of helping her, because through her poetry he is made to adopt the role of Plath's father. This explanation is possible because Hughes conflates Sylvia Plath's self with the personae of her poems

    The color of sea level: importance of spatial variations in spectral shape for assessing the significance of trends

    We investigate spatial variations in the shape of the spectrum of sea level variability, based on a homogeneously-sampled 12-year gridded altimeter dataset. We present a method of plotting spectral information as color, focusing on periods between 2 and 24 weeks, which shows that significant spatial variations in the spectral shape exist, and contain useful dynamical information. Using the Bayesian Information Criterion, we determine that, typically, a 5th order autoregressive model is needed to capture the structure in the spectrum. Using this model, we show that statistical errors in fitted local trends range between less than 1 and more than 5 times what would be calculated assuming “white” noise, and the time needed to detect a 1 mm/yr trend ranges between about 5 years and many decades. For global-mean sea level, the statistical error reduces to 0.1 mm/yr over 12 years, with only 2 years needed to detect a 1 mm/yr trend. We find significant regional differences in trend from the global mean.     Nuclear protein phosphatases with Kelch-repeat domains modulate the response to brassinosteroids in Arabidopsis

    Perception of the plant steroid hormone brassinolide (BL) by the membrane-associated receptor kinase BRI1 triggers the dephosphorylation and accumulation in the nucleus of the transcriptional modulators BES1 and BZR1. We identified bsu1-1D as a dominant suppressor of bri1 in A abidopsis. BSU1 encodes a nuclear-localized serine-threonine protein phosphatase with an N-terminal Kelch-repeat domain, and is preferentially expressed in elongating cells. BSU1 is able to modulate the phosphorylation state of BES1, counter acting the action of the glycogen synthase kinase-3 BIN2, and leading to inc eased steady-state levels of dephosphorylated BES1. BSU1 belongs to a small gene family; loss-of-function analyses unravel the extent of functional overlap among members of the family and confirm the role of these phosphatases in the control of cell elongation by BL. Our data indicate that BES1 is subject to antagonistic phosphorylation and dephosphorylation reactions in the nucleus, which fine-tune the amplitude of the response to BL.Fil: Mora Garcia, Santiago.     BRL1 and BRL3 are novel brassinosteroid receptors that function in vascular differentiation in Arabidopsis

    Plant steroid hormones, brassinosteroids (BRs), are perceived by the plasma membrane-localized leucine-rich-repeat-receptor kinase BRI1. Based on sequence similarity, we have identified three members of the BRI1 family, named BRL1, BRL2 and BRL3. BRL1 and BRL3, but not BRL2, encode functional BR receptors that bind brassinolide, the most active BR, with high affinity. In agreement, only BRL1 and BRL3 can rescue bri1 mutants when expressed under the control of the BRI1 promoter. While BRI1 is ubiquitously expressed in growing cells, the expression of BRL1 and BRL3 is restricted to non-overlapping subsets of vascular cells. Loss-of-function of brl1 causes abnormal phloem:xylem differentiation ratios and enhances the vascular defects of a weak bri1 mutant. bri1 brl1 brl3 triple mutants enhance bri1 dwarfism and also exhibit abnormal vascular differentiation.
